As the original thread have too much pages in my opinion, here's a tutorial I made to summarize things: 1) You need to use 'Gateway Rom Patcher' (included in the archive 'GW_OMEGA_2.3_BETA.zip' on the official website, or just search on Google for it) to inject an header to your rom. Note: If you use a public header or already have your own header dumped from a cart, go directly to 'step 6') 2) You can either use a public header (found on internet) or a private one. I advice you to use a private one coming from one of your own cart. It'll avoid potential bans if Nintendo decide to do so for multiple games when the same header at the same time. 3) To dump the header of one of your cart, just dump the whole cart as rom with the gateway.

You'll see, in the log section, the sentence: 'Exporting header: Done.' 6) Now, load the rom you want to add an header to, again by clicking 'Load ROM'. 7) Click on 'Import' and choose the header (.bin file) you want to add to the rom. The patcher might ask you 'Chip ID is not adapted to your ROM size, or the Media Type.

Do you want me to fix this?' , if then, answer yes. You'll see, in the log section, the sentence: 'Fixing chip ID: Done. Click on 'Inject' to apply changes.' Note that if the header have the same size/type than the game you want to insert a header to, it won't be require to click on 'Inject' to add the header, it'll be auto added. The 'Inject' button is just here to force the injection if the header has to be fixed before.

8) Now, just press 'Inject' to inject the header to the rom, if required (see step 7 for more infos). 9) Rename the rom extension from.3ds to.3dz and you are ready to play online. Note that saves between roms without and with headers aren't compatible (you can get the save back from card2 games with a little trick, using SaveDataFiler). Anyway, best is to convert to.3dz/have an header on all of your roms, even ones that seem to not have an online because sometimes, the online mode isn't accessible from start. Games that don't have online mode at all won't have a problem to run with an header anyway, that's why, in my opinion, best is to put one for all fo them.

Note: Be sure to keep a backup of your header somewhere. Personally, I put the header (.bin file) on the root of my 3DS SD Card to have a backup of it somewhere, and I also have the original cart so I could always redump it if needed. Note 2: Games released/converted as.cia files don't require any header to be played online.

That's because the header is made up of several different pieces of code. You have the manufacturer's ID, the cartridge ID, the game ID. And so, each one is unique. As long as you dump a retail cartridge you own and then extract the header from it, you'll be able to use it in any rom you want (but only one at a time). That's also valid if the game from where the header came from doesn't even have online capabilities.

If Nintendo has a database of all the headers info or all the cartridge's info or something like that, we just don't know. But there never seemed to be much problem with it. The real problem is really using a public header. So as long as you keep yours private and only use it in a rom at once (not going online at the same time with multiple roms having the same header), you should be fine.
